The New Modern Art Gallery moves to “Palazzo della Ragione”

The last 12th of April 2014 there had been the opening of the new Modern Art Gallery at “Palazzo della Ragione” in Verona. A new prestigious exhibition center dedicated to the important collections of “Achille Forti Gallery of Modern Art”.

It definitely opened to the public the permanent exhibition displaying its rich collection which wascreated through the years with donations and acquisitions of important nineteenth century artists. It was the first time the collection have been shown in public together with the collection of the two main foundations of the city: “Fondazione Cariverona” and “Fondazione Domus”.

The Palace

“Palazzo della Regione” located through the beautiful “piazza delle Erbe” and “Piazza dei Signori”, it’s been representing all along the heart of the city. A striking angle in which different architectural elements are superimposed and through the centuries they gave shape to the historical structure which represented and still represents the the ancient city center, The majestic “scaligero” building belongs to the XII century and it was subjected throughout the time to various interventions of restoration.

Now you can visit it with a unique ticket and enjoy your tour from “Torre dei Lamberti” to the “Scala della Ragione” and then from the “Cappella dei Notai” to the “Achille Forti Gallery of Modern Art” housed in the noble floor.

The history of the architectural complex is strictly related to the life of the small town. The building is the emblem of the power of the city center which offers viewpoints over the city and the surrounding area with its tower which date back to 1172. “Torre dei Lamberti” is the emblem of temporal power while the “Scala della Ragione” is the heart of the Ancient market Court.

Achille Forti Modern Art Gallery

The late 12th of April “Palazzo della Ragione” became the new exhibition center of the “Achille Forti Modern Art Gallery” which houses municipal collections together with those of the two important foundations for Modern and Contemporary Art, “Fondazione Cariverona” and “Fondazione Domus”. For the first time it was shown to the public the fusion between these amazing collections, the extraordinary works of art of the period between 1840 and 1940 which tell the story of Verona, and the relation between the collection and the city.

Today, as a result of all this, the collection can count on a holding of some 1.400 works of art, of which 1.100 date from the early nineteenth century to halfway through the twentieth, and a further 300 are works of contemporary art.

In particular there are some works by important Veronese artist or who are somehow linked to the city such as, the meditation “La Meditazione” of Francesco hayed and the paintings of Giovanni Fattori, Angelo Morbelli, Felice Casorati, Guido Trentini, Giacomo Balla, Umberto BacciniGino Rossi, Filippo de PIsis, Giorgio Morandi and the sculptures of Medardo Rosso and Arturo Martini.

The new Art Gallery still maintains the name of the great Achille Forti (1878-1937) a well-known botanist with conservative origin. The Achille Forti Gallery of Modern Art was set up in accordance with the wishes of Achille Forti who left the greater part of his legacy and his own art collection as an exceptional basis for a city museum devoted to the arts.
