The Roman Arena of Verona

After the Colosseum in Rome and the amphitheater in Capua, the Roman Arena is the third largest amphitheater in Italy, it could once seat 30,000 these days its capacity is 15,000.

It was built in the 1st century AD under the Flavian Emperors, for almost 400 hundreds gladiators fought here to entertain the masse with bloody carnage. The 404 AD was the date which signed the end of the Arena when the Emperor Honorious prohibited the gladiator games and the amphitheater stood empty for centuries.

The place was damaged by an earthquake in the twelfth century and until the nineteenth century it wasn’t used anymore to stage performances. The Arena id the icing on the cake. It dominates Piazza Bra from the north with its striking stage of gigantic dimensions in the very heart of one of the most beautiful Italian cities.

It’s the ideal location for events and it attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors to Verona especially during the Festival Season to see the Opera and the theater performance.

The annual Opera Festival has taken place here since 1913 and more than half and a million guests come to Verona every year to attend the spectacle in the ancient Roman Arena. The Opera Festival in Verona takes place every year from June to August and almost every day opera performances are shown which inspire young and old.

You can enjoy and choose from a great amount of famous opera spectacles every night. From” La Traviata” and “Aida” of the famous Giuseppe Verdi to “Nabucco”, “Il Barbiere di Siviglia”, “La Bohème”, “Roméo et Juliette”, “Madama Butterfly”, “Carmen”, “Il Trovatore”, “Tosca”, “Turandot”, “Rigoletto” you can see the most famous operas in the world.
